Enhancing Productivity and Wellness Through Ergonomic Design

The Challenge

An accounting firm in Port Perry was facing a range of common workspace issues: outdated furniture, cramped layouts, cluttered desks, and poorly designed seating. These shortcomings were impacting employee comfort, morale, and productivity. Staff reported discomfort, fatigue, and reduced efficiency due to static seating, non-adjustable desks, and limited storage. Even the executive offices struggled from ineffective space usage and dated furnishings.

Complicating the upgrade, the firm was relocating to a historic building requiring preservation. The challenge was to modernize the interior while maintaining the building’s historic features.

Aiming to improve comfort, wellness, and productivity, the owner partnered with ergoCentric’s in-house ergonomist to create a tailored solution—incorporating high-performance ergonomic furniture and the company’s signature blue throughout the design.

Outdated static furniture, unsupportive seating, and unmanaged monitor and cable clutter.

The Solution

With more than 35 years of experience in workplace ergonomics, ergoCentric conducted a comprehensive assessment of the firm’s needs. By understanding both employee and business requirements, ergoCentric delivered ergonomic workstation solutions that supported comfort, health, and productivity across the entire team.

At the core of the redesign was the airCentric 2 task chair, upholstered in the firm’s distinctive blue. Known for its adjustability and ergonomic design, the airCentric 2 promotes proper posture and reduces discomfort from prolonged sitting—backed by The science of sitting® and proudly made in Canada. Complementing this, upCentric height-adjustable desks were installed to support healthier work habits, allowing staff to alternate between sitting and standing at a desk height that works best for them.

Power was delivered through a daisy-chained system  of power bars, neatly housed in each desk’s cable management basket. This ensured accessible power at every workstation, without the clutter or tripping hazards of loose floor cables. Zgonic dual-monitor arms were also installed at each desk to reduce neck strain, minimize eye fatigue, and free up valuable workspace.

Clutter was addressed through custom personal storage solutions, including closets and pedestal filing units, designed to streamline workflows and keep desks clear. To reduce distractions and define work areas, ergoCentric Privacy Panels—color-matched to the firm’s brand—were installed, integrating seamlessly with the upCentric desks.

A shared workspace on the main floor was reconfigured with four ergonomic workstations, each equipped with personalized storage, privacy, and accessible power and data. Executive offices received the same ergonomic consideration, ensuring a cohesive and high-performing workspace throughout the redesign balanced modern functionality with the need to preserve original architectural elements.

The Results

The transformation delivered immediate, noticeable improvements. Employees quickly adapted to their new furniture, using sit-stand functionality more often, reporting reduced discomfort, and experiencing higher energy and focus throughout the day.

The redesigned space was cleaner, more organized, and visually aligned with the company’s identity— boosting morale and workplace satisfaction.

After installation, ergoCentric provided on-site ergonomic training to help employees get the most from their new workstations. Even those that were skeptical of the fully-adjustable airCentric 2, were won over once they understood the functionality. The receptionist, who had initially been hesitant later shared how much her new chair improved her comfort and daily experience.

This project demonstrated ergoCentric’s commitment to ergonomics that fit 100% of the workforce and highlights the impact workspaces have on employee  wellness, satisfaction, and overall productivity.

In an article for Focus on Scugog magazine, Justin, the Owner of the Port Perry Accounting Firm mentioned:

Another good feature are the baskets under each desk which house cords and powerbars. On top of each desk are accessible power and USB plug-ins...it’s user friendly. Canadian Made, all of the high quality ergoCentric furniture are manufactured in Mississauga, Ontario. Plus, there are warranties... I want the best.
